THE COLLECTIONS OF ALBERTUS SEBA: TYPE POSTERS

For Diego Vainesman’s Type & Context class, we were asked to make a trio of typography-based posters on one subject of our choice. Being forever interested in natural history and curiosity cabinets, I chose to focus on the 16th-century collections of Albertus Seba, and make my posters using paintings of objects that would be in his cabinets.

Using watercolor, ink, and pencil, I meticulously drew animals, shells, and objects that fell under three categories, one per poster: SEA, LAND, and AIR. I used each item to form the words of their respective categories, making the posters look like aged, handwritten records, complete with figure labels and cracked paper. This was a welcome opportunity to use traditional materials at a time when digital work was the only way to make deadlines otherwise.

These were printed at 24”x36” on matte paper at the Visible Futures Lab at SVA.
